Teaching method

Sophie's classes are intended for all ages and all levels, from beginners to intermediate and accomplished painters. Students learn to perfect their technique in painting, drawing and digital tools, using theory and exercises to fully master these tools. Most importantly, they learn to harness and guide their inspiration through the realisation of personal projects. Each student will find their identity as an artist by learning to execute their ideas on canvas and by transforming intuition into fully realised artwork.

The eye and the hand

LevygaleyStudio teaches technique in the service of creative expression. With sketching sessions in the museum and the close examination of renowned artists, students link the work of others with their own. Nurturing the students' critical eye allows them to reveal the challenges and strengths of their personal research and to learn from it. Sophie teaches students to train their eye to see what they cannot articulate in words by analysing what they see and dissociating it from its meaning. Through this, they can break down their relationship to the studied artwork and understand its mechanisms. Students also train their hands to use and master the techniques to reproduce and go beyond these mechanisms through experimentation and research.

The 5 questions

Sophie's innovative teaching method is based on her experience working with communities around the world and her practise of mindfulness mediation. Lessons are tailored to guide students towards achieving their creative potential with group exercises and personal projects. At the core of each lesson is the intention of fully understanding individual reactions to artworks by breaking them down with 5 questions; what are the subject's: size, technique, colour and composition? These questions provide the frame to build up students' confidence and to channel their instinct into their own artwork.
